Sarah Markwick
I moved to Vancouver in my twenties, but I grew up in Richmond, BC, a city below sea level, where none of the houses have basements.
I have a younger brother, a son, and two nephews who, while I was writing can this be right, never hesitated to ask me: How’s the book going, auntie Sarah? Especially Maks, who, unfortunately, will not be old enough to read this book for quite some time.
I like sharing music with people. I learned to play guitar as a teenager because I really love to sing, but I could only sing a cappella alone in my room for so long before I felt self-conscious, and singing with a guitar felt way safer.
I work with Sandy Gunn at Better Workplace Humans - an idea inspired by Don’t Be a Jerk at Work - the podcast we co-produced with Tara Kemes.
I have played on the same recreational hockey team for the past 20 years and been the captain for most of them.
As of late, The Avoider and The Pleaser are my most persistent saboteurs. They both showed up a lot during the writing of this book

“You know,” he says, meeting her eyes and pulling his face mask down to his chin, “I truly believe that not living your creativity is a version of self-harm.”
What becomes of someone who suspects they no longer fit into the life they built? What becomes of someone who no longer has the stomach or disposition for the compromise of marriage? What becomes of someone who stops believing the plan is working and has started wondering if rational is another word for bullshit?
This work of autobiographical fiction explores the complicated relationship between the rational head and impassioned heart while reminding us that it is not embarrassing to lose sight of ourselves and it is not selfish to want to find ourselves again.

I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with hystericalwoman.com when I bought it a few years ago, and then we needed to come up with a name for the book to be published under.
It didn’t take long.
