Sarah Markwick

  • I moved to Vancouver in my twenties, but I grew up in Richmond, BC, a city below sea level, where none of the houses have basements.

  • I have a younger brother, a son, and two nephews who, while I was writing can this be right, never hesitated to ask me: How’s the book going, auntie Sarah? Especially Maks, who, unfortunately, will not be old enough to read this book for quite some time.

  • I like sharing music with people. I learned to play guitar as a teenager because I really love to sing, but I could only sing a cappella alone in my room for so long before I felt self-conscious, and singing with a guitar felt way safer.

  • I work with Sandy Gunn at Better Workplace Humans - an idea inspired by Don’t Be a Jerk at Work - the podcast we co-produced with Tara Kemes.

  • I have played on the same recreational hockey team for the past 20 years and been the captain for most of them.

  • As of late, The Avoider and The Pleaser are my most persistent saboteurs. They both showed up a lot during the writing of this book

launch parties

There are two launch parties in October!

Come for an afternoon (or evening) of readings, music, and socializing. It will be chill, there will be some refreshments, and I’ll have some books there too! Half-price copies of the book are available for pre-order for launch party guests until September 18th in the shop.

A bit about the music...
Audrey Patterson and Julia Chien, will perform an original piece that Jules has composed for this event.

Jules is a talent on the ice and on percussion (but not at the same time...yet). She is Principal Percussionist of the Vancouver Opera Orchestra and performs regularly with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. She’s also in a percussion duo called Infamy Too! and is a member of the Veda Hille Sisterhood - a 6-piece ensemble playing two shows at the Cultch in September.

Aud is usually my D partner (on ice), but always my partner/partner (off ice). She is also a talented musician - Principal Trumpet with the Okanagan Symphony Orchestra for over 20 yrs. In Vancouver. I have seen her perform everything from Mariachi to the Remembrance Day Ceremony at Mountain View Cemetery with Little Chamber Music.

I'm really looking forward to celebrating the launch of this novel with you all. Feel free to share these events with anyone who would enjoy such a thing.

can this be right

release date: Sept 8th 2024

“You know,” he says, meeting her eyes and pulling his face mask down to his chin, “I truly believe that not living your creativity is a version of self-harm.”

What becomes of someone who suspects they no longer fit into the life they built? What becomes of someone who no longer has the stomach or disposition for the compromise of marriage? What becomes of someone who stops believing the plan is working and has started wondering if rational is another word for bullshit

This work of autobiographical fiction explores the complicated relationship between the rational head and impassioned heart while reminding us that it is not embarrassing to lose sight of ourselves and it is not selfish to want to find ourselves again.

I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with hystericalwoman.com when I bought it a few years ago, and then we needed to come up with a name for the book to be published under.

It didn’t take long.
